The Supremacy of Love

July 30, 2008

1-13

‘What is love?’  How’s that for a topic?  The bible is so sufficient for our lives that it contains all we need to answer questions as difficult and elemental as ‘what is love?’

One of the best descriptions and discourses to be found exist in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians chapter 13 verses 1-13.  In this brief chapter Paul lays out the negative examples of love (what love is not) and the affirmative definitions.  In this first post we will take a look at vss. 1-8.

Paul begins by addressing what Love is not, he brilliantly lays out five abilities and about 6 or so quantifiers for what love is and is not.  It is important that we realize that even if we ourselves have great ability, or others we know possess real talent with out love those talent amount to nothing. Speaking in Tongues (speaking eloquently or well)(vs1), Prophecy, Faith (vs2), Generosity and even sacrifice(vs3); all without love profit nothing. (Matt 16:26)  Love is not: Impatient, unkind, envious or proud (vs4), resentful, irritable or rude (vs5), enjoying wrongdoing (vs6), as we look at this list what characteristics mark our lives if we were to form a check list how many of these qualities do we display on daily basis?

Paul then moves on to what Love IS: Kind and patient (vs4) Bears all things, believe all things, hopes all things, endures all things (vs7), never-ending(vs8).  Out of this list how do you fair?  I believe that it is safe to assume and Paul will emphasize here in the next several verses that we don’t quite match up, we are deficient, we only exist in-part not in-full.

I think that it can be argued that the picture painted here stroke by stroke, takes on the countenance of our Lord.  For only he Bears ALL (Isa53:4), Believes ALL, Hopes ALL, Endures ALL, only He is Never-ending (Heb 13:8).  The Greek word for love used here is “Agape” Love, unconditional, sacrificial love displayed by our Lord for us in that while we were still sinners He died for us Rom 5:8.  The Love put on display here is Christ, any abilities we have, if we don’t have Him, and have received the Love that he embodies, then we are woefully inadequate I would argue to the point of death(Rom6:23).

Feel free to discuss, in the next post part 2, we will take a look at the hope we have in our coming regeneration in which all that is in part NOW will be made full in Him THEN . (vs 8-12.)

July 29, 2008

This blogs name comes from James 1:21 which states; “..put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and recieve with meekness the Implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” ESV

This blog will focus on that word, His word which was and is and is to come.
